Border Region Behavioral Health Center has services for people who live in the counties of Webb, Jim Hogg, Starr, or Zapata.
This center is a nonprofit contract agency of the state of Texas that offers low-cost and no-cost services to help your child who has a mental health diagnosis. Available services depend on your child’s diagnosis and eligibility to receive services. The center also has a 24-hour crisis hotline at 1-800-643-1102.
The Center’s “Children, Adolescent, and Parental Services” program (CAPS) helps children ages 3-17 who have a mental illness. CAPS assists those who have been in trouble at school, with the law or who may need hospital services. CAPS uses a sliding fee scale to determine what you can pay. If you cannot pay anything, you can still get services.
To apply for CAPS, you will need:
You and your child will benefit from CAPS services – including doctor referrals, counseling, jail rehab, mobile crisis team, medicine, and support groups.
Another important program at the Center––known as the Intellectual & Developmental Disability (IDD) program––helps people over 18 who have an intellectual or developmental disability, pervasive developmental disorder, autism, or related conditions.
Like CAPS, you must apply to be a part of the Center’s IDD program. But once you are, they offer respite care, nursing care, day rehab, and community support.
If you are a resident in one of the counties – Webb, Jim Hogg, Starr, or Zapata – that the Behavioral Health Center services, it is a large, supportive organization you should look into.
Having support for you and your child with a disability is a very important part of this journey.

Even if it has been a long time, it’s important for caregivers to start taking care of themselves. Catching up on my healthcare and doing things just for me has made me happier and healthier.

Who was it that said “Nothing is constant except change?” I wish that person could tell those of us who don’t love change, even good change, how to manage it.
