Wade watches a lot of TV and movies. Once he finds something he likes, he can watch it repeatedly. His newest obsession is gymnastics. He loves watching gymnastic events on YouTube.
The obsession began with Olympic diving during the Summer Olympics 2016. I think he liked the flipping in the air. After almost a year of diving fixation, he switched to Olympic gymnastics.
He asked to watch YouTube. Then he would tell us what to search. “Men’s floor, rings, pommel horse,” etc. He learned the athletes’ names. He learned the names of the competitions. He learned the different countries. He’s all in. He can now watch YouTube on his communication device. Most of the time, he watches one event on his device while watching another event on the TV!
When the 2018 Winter Olympics were getting ready to start, I found a red USA Olympic shirt. When I gave it to Wade, he asked to put it on right away. He was so happy!
My husband also found the perfect gift on Amazon. He found an Olympic gold medal for PyeongChang. When we gave Wade the medal, he was so excited! He even asked if it was his birthday! After 10 years, we finally found gifts that he really likes!
I’m so happy he has something that he enjoys. Gymnastics is all he wants to watch. Gymnastics is all he wants to talk about. Since he has an interest, we can now buy meaningful gifts. He said he wants to start collecting Olympic medals now!
A friend also contacted me. Her husband has an Olympic coin that he wants to give Wade. That’s something else he can start collecting, which also makes for great gifts!
Finding this interest has been powerful for Wade. Not only does it help us in the gift giving area, but also it gives him something to look forward to. Maybe one day, we’ll make it to watch gymnastics at the Olympics. That would be the ultimate gift!

Even if it has been a long time, it’s important for caregivers to start taking care of themselves. Catching up on my healthcare and doing things just for me has made me happier and healthier.

Who was it that said “Nothing is constant except change?” I wish that person could tell those of us who don’t love change, even good change, how to manage it.
