It’s June and school is out. What will my child with a disability do now? If my child did not have a disability and I didn't sign them up for summer camp in time - what would I do with them? It should be no different for my child with disabilities. While endless therapy sessions may be planned, my child may think of those as work. There are many options for recreation and fun. Some events may be free or low cost.
Here are some ideas to check out:
The City of Houston has several outdoor swimming pools that are free to the public. Several museums have free days or evenings. The Museum of Natural Science & the Children’s Museum of Houston have free hours (2 pm - 5 pm) on Thursdays. The Museum of Fine Arts is free to all children under age 12. Armand Bayou Nature Center is only $2 for children under 12. The Rosenburg Railroad Museum is $4 for everyone under 14. Sea Center Texas in Lake Jackson is free every day.
Many local community centers have fun events (i.e. one week camps, swimming, etc.). Our local library frequently offers free weekly story times, craft days, or movies. How about camps for kids without disabilities in areas that interest your child. If your child needs support, you might find a volunteer in a high school senior or national honor society member who requires community service hours. GISH Picks in the Greater Houston area compiles a listing of summer activities, as well as many other fun, family friendly events.
Many school districts have free and reduced breakfast during the summer – It is a way to get out and meet others. Join a Meetup Group. There are several groups listed on this website. Go to the Find Services, Groups & Events page on the site to find groups near you.
By getting out of the house and meeting others, we can expand the circle of support for our children while having fun at the same time. Also, take a look at our Navigating Daily Life page for additional ideas for ways to have a fun & happy summer!
