Originally the organization was named the National Committee - Arts for the Handicapped. In 1985 the name changed to Very Special Arts and in 2010 it became VSA. In 2011, VSA merged with the Kennedy Center's Office on Accessibility to become the Department of VSA and Accessibility at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. VSA Texas was founded in 1996 as Access Arts Austin and became the Texas affiliate of VSA in 2001. In 2020 the names has changed again to Art Spark.
Art Spark challenges perceptions of how people contribute by creating an arts-inspired, inclusive community of individuals with diverse abilities.
Art Spark is an expert resource on inclusive arts. They create and maintain an accessible and open community where everyone can participate. Their goal is to provide support and training to the public, enhance personal growth, and offer Texans access to the creative work of people with diverse abilities.
Art Spark, a 501(c) 3 not-for-profit, delivers excellent cultural, professional, educational and public awareness arts services to communities with diverse abilities.
Arts experiences enhance the skills, confidence and quality of life for people with disabilities. Art Spark supports this by offering programs that enable educational achievement and career success, events that feature the work of our artists, and specialized arts training for artists, educators and service providers.
Recognizing that every person has a voice that deserves to be heard, Art Spark partners with supporters, volunteers, community organizations, educators, and state and local governments across Texas to promote and facilitate people with and without disabilities working together to create inclusive and strong communities.
Art Spark challenges themselves and their communities to build bridges and strength by making cultural programming and venues available to all.
