My son has wanted to attend a sleepover summer camp for years. I must confess that as an over protective mom (yes, I did just admit it). I secretly hoped that he might forget about it and move on to a different kind of adventure. I was worried about him being away from us, and whether they would treat him well. Yet I want him to be as independent as possible and that won't work with us always at his side. I thought long and hard about giving it all a try and I tried to be as objective as possible. I started by looking for camps that would accommodate children with disabilities. I looked at what kind of camps (interests) were available. I considered what age groups each camp served. The length of the camp session was also an important consideration. I looked at the camp cost. If it was out of our budget I asked if they offered financial assistance.
I took some time to look for options and availability over a few weeks and I was very happy to see a good number of inclusive summer camps available. I was able to locate camps that served only specific disabilities, camps for siblings, faith based camps, as well as both day and overnight camps. Each camp has their own registration deadlines, deposit requirements, camp fees and scholarship deadlines, so keep that in mind when you are looking at summer camp options for your child or young adult. Summer camp slots fill up early, so be sure to register as early as possible.
I submitted my son's applications for consideration and a request for scholarship consideration 3 months before the camp was scheduled. I am very happy to say that Camp Blessing Texas accepted his application and provided partial scholarship assistance for him to attend. With medical staff on site and a 1-1 counselor to camper ratio, all my worries were taken away. Finally, his wish came true.
