Autism is the fastest growing developmental disability, and its prevalence is increasing. In 1970, one in 2,000 people was diagnosed with autism in the United States. Today it is estimated to be one in 54. Services for people with autism transitioning to adulthood are greatly needed, which is why Easterseals launched Greenleaf Neurodiversity Community Center (Greenleaf NCC) to offer new vocational exploration opportunities and structured social activities focused on this special population’s capabilities and strengths.
Services Includes:
Social Creativity Clubs
Social Creativity clubs provide a safe and supportive community where participants can pursue creative interests with neurotypical and neurodivergent mentors, while fostering skills in creative problem-solving, communication, social relationships, self-advocacy, and independent living.
Community School
In partnership with Austin ISD, Greenleaf NCC is offering a new public school transition program for students who are 18 years old or older, have met state graduation requirements, and have autism or related neurodivergent conditions. Students in the program work toward mastery of their IEP (individual education plan) and post-secondary school goals through project-based learning in creative arts and technology, and through direct instruction in the classroom and in community settings.
Vocational Training & Assessment
Classes in workplace readiness, a summer work experience program, and career exploration and assessment services are also available.
