Sometimes, we just need a little help to get by. Life “happens” and financial help can get us back on our feet. There are a lot of resources in our area now. Many groups make applying for help easy and fast by putting applications online. That means we don’t have to wait in line for hours with our kids in tow.
If you need help such as food stamps or medical insurance, you can apply online. Many times you can even have your interview done over the phone! Simply log on to Your Texas Benefits to apply.
For immediate help paying bills, the Catholic Charities may be able to assist. The Catholic Charities Community Services of Odessa (432-332-1387) has a food pantry, family thrift store and more. You will need proof of income, your bills, ID and proof of residency.
Food assistance can be found in several locations. The West Texas Food Bank, with locations in Odessa (432-580-6333) and Alpine (432-837-1580) lets residents go to the food bank once a year to get a food package. In the San Angelo area, contact the Concho Valley Regional Food Bank (325-655-3231). Foodpantries.org has a search feature on their website that allows you to search for a food pantry in/near your city.
Other groups in the area may also be able to help: Jesus House (432-272-3362) and Breaking Bread Soup Kitchen (432-689-2339). Check with them to learn more about their services.
Salvation Army Texas offers meals & food pantry as well as help with rent and utility bills. They also offer back-to-work programs, family stores, clothing, help with transportation, and seasonal needs. In the Midland area, call 432-683-3614 for help. Go online to find the Texas Salvation Army Center nearest you.
If you need help in finding a job, the Texas Workforce Commission may be able to help. They offer help pay for childcare and have a computer lab to apply for jobs, a current listing of jobs in the area and more. Look at their list of programs for more services or call 432-580-9779.
Services provided by West Texas Opportunities include emergency help with food, rent, testing fees and utility bills. Check out their website for contact information or to learn more about their services. They have several offices across west Texas.
