When the long hot days of summer are over, will you be ready for the new school year? We will all be busy meeting new teachers, buying supplies, and working out schedules. Week days may be pretty full during the school year, but what will the weekends bring?
Our children keep us busy with all kinds of activities. With the start of school, our weekdays are packed with activities to keep young minds busy. Having a child with a disability adds a few more activities into the mix. A typical school week may include choir, physical therapy, drama, occupational therapy, 4-H, band or speech therapy. Our busy schedules may have us looking for a little time to relax and have fun.
Would you like to switch gears and do something different? Do you have a child between the ages of 5 and 15 with a disability or special health care need? Miracle Kids of South Texas is a non-profit organization that puts together events and activities for our children in the Rio Grande Valley. They offer fun events 6 - 8 times a year for children with disabilities or special health care needs to enjoy. Outdoor and indoor events are scheduled all across the Rio Grande Valley, which allows all Valley families an opportunity to attend. Some of the events have included miniature golf, bowling, football, tennis, baseball and our favorite ... fishing.
Miracle Kids of South Texas works with great volunteers, and sponsors to provide food, t-shirts and medals for participants. With the help of a trained "buddy," children can have fun in a safe environment while building self confidence and developing new friendships in the community. Kids enjoy these events and getting to be in the spotlight. Proud parents cheering them on helps build self esteem. A great benefit of the program is that it also provides valuable networking opportunities for parents.
So, is the fun over when school is in session? Not if Miracle Kids of South Texas has anything to say about it! To get more information or to check out their schedules, go to the Miracle Kids Facebook page. Check them out to see what kind of fun they’ve got going on. Then, check out our page on Services, Groups & Events for more fun things to do!
