The Challenged Athletes Foundation believes that involvement in sports at any level increases self-esteem, encourages independence and enhances quality of life.
Challenged Athletes Foundation vision is to be a recognized leader in a movement through which physically challenged athletes are accepted and respected at the same level as able-bodied athletes, to have a great and significant impact on each physically challenged athlete served, and to reach out to the physically challenged community by providing inspiration, awareness and mentoring.
GRANTS: In 2018, CAF funded 2,806 individual grants totaling $4.3M across 95 different sports and activities; 40% of grants are distributed to households under $20K. 25% of grants are distributed to households between $20K- $50K. In an Olympic/Paralympic year, CAF will have supported 40%-50% of Team USA Athletes on their athletic journey; 30% of grants globally funded are for youth athletes under 18. We strive to reach challenged athletes at a young age to ensure they have access to a full, active life. We’ve also launched a pilot program with Nike called the Athlete’s Path Program to help develop youth athletes on their individual athletic journey.
CAMPS & CLINICS: Throughout the year and around the country CAF hosts over 20 running and mobility camps and clinics in partnership with Global sponsors Össur and Nike. Every October CAF hosts our flagship event, the Aspen Medical Products San Diego Triathlon Challenge. In 2017, we brought together 200 challenged athletes including 50 youth athletes and their families plus 600 able-bodied athletes to celebrate sport and competition in an inclusive environment.
MENTORSHIP & COMMUNITY: We create opportunities for community and mentorship so that people with physical challenges can learn from those that have gone before them, and also be inspired to set new athletic goals.
