All services are FREE to children and their families. Children & Families must be referred by Law Enforcement investigators or DFPS case workers. Every case of alleged child sexual abuse in Harris county will be referred to The Children’s Assessment Center by the reporting agency.
Forensic Services are provided to children under 3 to 17-years-old who may have experienced child sexual abuse or witnessed a violent crime. Extended interviews may be appropriate when a child does not disclose during the forensic interview, but there is evidence suggestive of victimization. The primary focus is to ensure the safety and well-being of the child during an investigation into allegations of child abuse.
The CAC offers a variety of services including psychological evaluations, psychiatric care, and individual, group and family therapy to children, siblings, and caregivers. Expressive therapies including play, movement, art, and music therapies allow children to express their feelings in creative ways. Therapy teaches children that they are not alone, helps them understand that the abuse is the responsibility of the offender, and ultimately provides a healthy way to avoid long-term trauma.
They also offer a medical clinic that performs specialized medical evaluations on-site in a child-friendly, non-threatening environment. This helps minimize the child’s discomfort and fear during the exam. A medical exam is offered to any child who has allegations or concerns of abuse. The collection of evidence, documentation of potential trauma and the assessment for sexually transmitted infections, injuries, and pregnancy may occur. Most importantly, the medical evaluation, and specifically the medical examination, is performed to reassure the child and family that his/her body is okay.
Families referred to CAC can also be offered assistance for services such as food, transportation, internet, housing, protective orders and domestic violence intervention.
