My son wanted to attend a sleepover summer camp for years. As an overprotective mom (I admit it), I secretly hoped he’d forget about it and move on to a different kind of adventure. I was worried about him being away from us, and whether they would treat him well.
Yet I want him to be as independent as possible. That won't work if we’re always by his side. I thought long and hard about giving it a try. I tried to be as objective as possible.
I started by looking for camps designed for children with disabilities. I searched by interests. I considered age groups. I factored in the length of the camp sessions. I looked at the camp costs. If it was out of our budget, I asked if they had financial assistance.
After a few weeks, I found a good number of summer camps. There were camps for specific disabilities, camps for siblings, faith-based camps and both day and overnight camps.
I also learned that each camp has its own deadlines, requirements and fees. Keep that in mind when you’re looking. Be sure to register as early as possible.
I turned in my son's applications and scholarship requests three months before the camp was scheduled. I’m thrilled to say that the camp we chose accepted our application and provided a partial scholarship. With medical staff on-site and a 1-to-1 counselor-to-camper ratio, all my worries were taken away.
His wish finally came true.
If you are considering next year's summer camp for your child, there are numerous options in Texas. The one we chose provided caring support and incredible kindness, from beginning to end. It was an absolute success for everyone involved.
