I adore my family, and one of my love languages is serving. As a mom, putting others first seems almost innate. Our selflessness is our superpower. It’s a beautiful thing, but just like anything else, overdoing it can become unhealthy. When we start neglecting ourselves, it can cause our mental health to suffer.
Below I have listed a few ways I learned to practice self-care — some things I’ve put into practice to keep me sane.
I also move my body, walk, or find other ways to increase movement. Remember, “If you don’t use it, you’ll lose it.”
At the end of the day, the key is to remember who you are. What is important to you? What do you enjoy? What motivates you? Get rid of the mom's guilt and give yourself more credit for doing the best you can. Remember, “If mama ain’t happy, no one’s happy!”
Self-Care is one of the most important things you can do for yourself and your family.
It’s hard to make new friends as an adult and the parent of a child with disabilities. However, parent-to-parent support is alive and well on the internet!

Parenting a child with a disability is a journey, not a destination. Some people have been dealing with this since their child was born. Some people have joined the journey later in their child’s life.

So much I've written about focuses on my child's autism spectrum disorder and ADHD challenges. For just this moment, I want to focus on the absolute, beautiful joy of being his mom.
