When you have a child with a disability, having support is vital. Support can be as simple as talking with another parent who understands what you're going through. Knowing where to find this support is key for you and your family.
Other parents who have kids with disabilities can be a great help. You may connect with other family members at school or in a parent support program. These family members understand what you are dealing with. You do not need to explain much. They can be there to listen and share information about services you did not know about.
The internet is also a good source to find help. You can find support groups for specific disabilities just by searching online. Check out the Find Services, Groups, and Events page on this website to find groups near you. If you know of a helpful resource not listed, you can share it so others can benefit too.
Social media sites like Facebook have groups for everything these days. You can learn tips, connect with families or find out about meetings and social events. You can also search the internet for sites where you can start or join groups based on your interests or needs. You can plan meetups together, like coffee dates for moms, playgroups or teen groups.
Don’t forget about your other children! Siblings without disabilities often need to talk to others like them. Ask your school counselor if they have a group that would help.
The Sibling Support Project is an organization that offers Sibshops, a place where young people without disabilities can meet others. It is a time to talk about what it’s like to have a sibling with a disability. Plus, the group takes time for fun! See if there is a group near you on their website.
Remember, you can find support in your community too. Your friends, neighbors, co-workers and people you meet in your faith community, youth clubs or sports might be able to help. People do not have to be focused on disability to be helpful. Support can come from anyone.
Having support is super important when you have a child with a disability. It can make a big difference for you and your family. Reach out and find the support you need.
Check out the Connecting with other Parents and Family Support pages on this website to start connecting.
